Denim and Old Lace

Have you seen „Arsenic and Old Lace“? The movie directed by Frank Capra in 1944, starring brilliant Cary Grant. One of the best comedies of all times, as far as I am concerned. It does not matter how many times I have seen it, every time I watch it again, at some point tears of laughter start sprinkling from my eyes. If you have seen the movie, you probably understand why when I hear „old lace“ I have to think of the movie. If you haven’t seen it, I warmly recommend that you do.
This handbag has nothing to do with the movie. Apart from materials – I can not help giggling every time I hear „old lace“. This is yet another bag made from things that longed for their second life.
Large hand crocheted curtain. Old lace. Torn in the centre. The size of the curtain around two by three metres. Beautiful pattern. Made from white cotton thread. I look at it in admiration, so much time and patience and love have been invested in making it, knot by knot, thousands and thousands of them. There is no way I am going to throw it away, regardless of the fact that it is torn. Something has to be done with the curtain.
My friend’s pair of blue jeans. Torn a bit as well. Deep dark blue colour.
Lace curtain and blue jeans. The combination of white lace and dark denim looks modern and has a scent of romantic past at the same time. Ok. I like the way those contrasting materials complement each other. So I got down to work and made denim clutch bag decorated with beautiful old handmade lace.
Denim and Old Lace is made from old blue jeans and hand crocheted old curtain, giving them their second life. It measures 30 cm by 17 cm, it is interfaced for firmness and shape and lined with cotton fabric in gentle lavender colour. There is one open pocket inside of the bag and the bag closes with magnetic snap closure.
